Why Make Smoothies Without Banana?

Let’s quickly cover some reasons why banana may not be ideal for every smoothie. The most obvious reason being that many people simply don’t enjoy the flavour of bananas. The taste can be detected through many different fruits and add-ins, so if it’s a flavour you don’t like it can really ruin an otherwise good smoothie. Some other common reasons to avoid using bananas:

  • Banana allergy
  • Potential texture issues
  • Caloric density
  • Bananas not available
  • Unpleasant taste

How to Make Smoothies Creamy Without Banana

When we talk about making smoothies without banana, we are really talking about replacing the consistency that banana creates in smoothies with other ingredients. Our main goal is creaminess. Bananas can also provide smoothies with other benefits like thickness, so let’s cover each replacement in detail so you know which one to use depending on the type of smoothie you are making.

Frozen Mango

This is an easy go-to for replacing banana in many smoothies. Mango replaces banana best in green or tropical smoothies, as either the only fruit or in combination with other fruits. It’s high fibre and satiating like banana without the overpowering taste. Fresh mango works fine, but frozen is much better if the goal is to create a thick and creamy consistency. Mango also has a natural sweetness just like banana, so it won’t throw off the balance of your smoothie! Use frozen mango as a 1:1 replacement for banana in almost any recipe.

Oats

Oats may be a surprising replacement for banana, but they go a long way in adding creaminess if a thick consistency isn’t your main concern. This is particularly helpful for dessert or high protein smoothies where a smooth and creamy texture is really key. Oats are also high in fibre and calories, which means you can swap out the banana and still have a smoothie that’s just as (if not more) filling. Use approximately half the amount of oats as banana in recipes. You can always add more to taste.

Frozen Coconut Cream

This is another option especially great for dessert smoothies. Coconut cream is high fat, so it really makes whatever it’s added to ultra creamy and satisfying! It’s important to note that coconut cream is much more effective than coconut milk in terms of replacing banana, although you can use either. The cream is thicker and higher in fats that create the smooth consistency. You may want to add more sweetener to the smoothie as coconut cream lacks the subtle sweetness bananas have. To freeze, carefully spoon coconut cream into an ice cube tray and place in the freezer overnight. Use as a 1:1 replacement for frozen banana.

Plant-based Yogurt

Yogurt is an easy replacement for banana that keeps the smooth creamy consistency intact. This is a great hack because plant-based yogurts come in so many different flavours these days. A natural, slightly sweetened yogurt will replace banana most accurately, but don’t be afraid of trying vanilla, fruity or unsweetened versions! Greek or high-protein versions can add even more creaminess and result in a thicker smoothie. Use as a 1:1 replacement for banana in tropical, green, berry or protein smoothies.

Avocado

This banana replacement can be used effectively two ways – fresh or frozen. Fresh avocado creates an amazing creamy texture in smoothies and even a little thickness. This is perfect for green smoothies but because avocado has such a mild flavour it can be combined with almost anything. Using frozen avocado chunks in smoothies will add creaminess and thickness similar to frozen banana. Frozen avocado is incredibly hard, so make sure to use a high quality blender with a strong motor.

Other Frozen Fruits

There are other fruits besides just mangos that can replace banana in smoothies when they are frozen. My personal favourite in almost every smoothie is pineapple! It’s subtly sweet and high fibre like banana, with a mild taste that blends well with so many other ingredients. Two other great fruits to freeze and use in place of banana are cherries and papaya.

Making Thick Smoothie Bowls Without Banana

Making a thick smoothie bowl without banana requires learning just one golden rule… liquid control. This is the absolute key to making any smoothie bowl as thick as you want, even without using banana. Once you master liquid to frozen ratios you will never make another thin and sad smoothie bowl again.

In all of the smoothie bowl recipes we share here you will notice one common detail – the liquid ingredients are very small amounts. Most people underestimate the importance of keeping liquids minimal, and may add plenty of extra in order to make the blending process easier. If you want to make super thick smoothie bowls you must control the amount of liquids. It can be tempting to pour more oat milk, juice, water or coconut milk into the blender but you must resist! Let’s go over some essential points for employing this rule of liquid control.

  1. Just cover the blades. This is the easiest tip to remember for all future smoothie bowl blending. Add the liquid ingredient (oat milk, coconut milk, water, etc) until it just covers the blades of the blender container. No need to remember exact measurements, this trick may be approximate but it always works.
  2. Use a thicker liquid. This one is pretty self explanatory. Thicker liquids result in thicker smoothie bowls. Most of my smoothie bowl recipes use coconut milk for this exact reason. As a rule of thumb, the thinner the liquid the more conservatively it should be added to the blender.

Bonus Tip

Don’t over blend. This may seem unrelated to liquid control, but actually, it’s key. Smoothie bowls are made using frozen fruit, and when frozen fruit is blended for too long it begins to melt. Fruit is extremely water-rich so when it melts due to over blending all of the thick frozen texture becomes watery. This can ruin an otherwise perfect smoothie bowl in seconds. The solution is to use a high power blender that can get the job done in just a minute or two max.

Common Questions About Banana-Free Smoothies

Are banana-free smoothies still creamy?

Yes, smoothies without any banana can be just as creamy and satisfying as ones with banana. By using ingredients like plant-based yogurt, oats, coconut cream and fruits like avocado or mango a creamy consistency can easily be achieved.

What’s the best banana substitute?

Frozen mango is the best fruit replacement for frozen banana in smoothies. Frozen coconut cream is the best non-fruit banana replacement overall. Both of these ingredients give smoothies a thick creaminess similar to banana.

Can you meal prep banana-free smoothies?

Yes, smoothies without banana can be prepped and stored in the same way as smoothies with banana. In fact, they may even last slightly better in the fridge than banana-based smoothies do.

Do smoothie bowls need banana?

No, smoothie bowls can easily be made without any banana. Make super thick smoothie bowls of any kind using the ‘liquid control’ rule (explained above). The best fruits instead of banana for smoothie bowls are frozen mango, pineapple and cherries.
